Rhea Eggshells
This is a Rhea eggshell. Rheas, like emus, are also smaller cousins to the ostrich and said to be particularly ill tempered birds. This shell can be various sizes from 6X4 inches to as large as 10X6 inches. Their tough pale beige eggshell is great for carving or just etching like the scrimshaw etched design below. Scrimshaw is the ancient art of scratching an image into a bone, ivory or eggshell then applying ink and wiping off to reveal the image clearly. IT IS NOT just painted or drawn on the egg using an ink pen. Every line is cut into the eggshell using my dental-type drill.
